Turning 30: Week 52 - A Review

Happy December, everyone! It's hard to believe that it's already been 52 weeks (a year!) since I started. My birthday is in exactly two weeks from now and it will mark the end of my Turning 30 project (not the end of the blog, of course!). It's time to start reviewing what a whole year of living consciously and pursuing my dreams and goals was like.

What was the biggest change?
Definitely quitting my day-job and starting to work as a freelance illustrator (and sometimes photographer). It's not exactly what I went out to do but I love it and it was a great and wonderful surprise. As much as I still want to make films and act, I am very proud and happy that I am now living off making art.

What was the biggest challenge?
Figuring out what I want to do with my life. I've realized that I'll never have a definite answer for this. It's an ongoing process and I like way too many different things to be doing the same job for the rest of my life. All I know is that I need to be doing something creative.
The second challenge is time management. I've never worked for myself before and it's quite difficult to find a good work flow.

Would I do the Turning 30 Project again?
Absolutely. Taking a year and really thinking about life, trying new things (like living a month without sugar, starting to write a feature film script, getting obsessed with Instagram and taking online courses) really opened my eyes to new ways of living. A year ago I was unhappy and stuck with negative thoughts. Now I feel more confident, excited about the future and what it will hold, generally so much happier and ready to start a new chapter of my life.

Do you have any questions or need help starting your own life changing project?

  2. THis may have been exactly what I needed to hear today. I might need to think about something like this too.

Congrats on it being so close to your birthday and also that you have found something you love to do and are able to do it for a career. Your willingness to go and to go and try things is an inspiration.

Congratulations, Vanessa! And it's been awesome knowing you and journeying you throughout this year!! I've thoroughly enjoyed your posts and instagram pictures, I hope you will keep on blogging/at least taking pictures around Berlin!
My "project" right now is mostly in the realms of parenting, but more like looking at parenting as an opportunity to transform/grow up myself. Eventhough we are in a different path, I can always see the similarity in challenges that we have.

I was saying that it felt shorter than a year to me, but then I was a bit late to this project; and that this year's project's not the end but rather a beginning of your journey :)

  7. Thanks! Well, it was a surprise in a way. I used to draw a lot (a LOT) in high school but too a hiatus from it for about 10 years. And I've always kind of like photography but never had a decent camera. Not even close. So the surprise part was that people are willing to pay me for it! I never thought about doing either as a job! :)
